VOLO Reader Compatibility

This article and the other articles in this section highlight the different reader technologies supported by VOLO.

Reader Technologies

Which Reader Technologies does Volo Support?

VOLO will work with any Readers, provided that they use a compatible Reader Interface.

Most readers will offer a Wiegand output, which is likely to be supported within VOLO using either one of the standard Wiegand reader formats available, or through the Custom Wiegand Reader feature.

Reader Technology Options

  • Fingerprint
  • Facial Recognition
  • ANPR
  • Barcode/QR Code
  • Smartphone
    • NFC
    • Bluetooth
  • Keypad
  • RFID
    • Low Frequency (125 kHz)
    • High Frequency (13.56 MHz)
tip

If you would like specific recommendations for readers that have been tested with VOLO and are in use on live sites, please reach out through the VOLO website and provide some details of your requirements.

Cloud Considerations

Although VOLO works with a wide range of reader technologies, there are some other considerations to keep in mind.

If you are using complex credentials like Biometric data (fingerprints) then you may need a secondary system to manage and distribute these credentials amongst the readers, as well as VOLO to manage the access control across your sites.

When using a Biometric solution (let's say fingerprint readers), your fingerprint templates must be saved and shared with the relevant readers. This allows the fingerprint reader to:

  1. Scan your finger
  2. Compare it to the stored templates
  3. If a match is found, send a standard token/credential number to VOLO
  4. VOLO will respond and either grant or deny access according to your access level

The solution for managing your complex credentials and VOLO can work side by side, but there are some limitations.

Extra Admin

You will need to manage the users in both systems, although you can still revoke access through VOLO, alone

Single Site vs Multi Site

VOLO allows you to manage access across all your sites with multi-site access levels, but some biometric solutions require a database to be maintained locally.
